A journey toward wholeness, the Alexander study is a deep healing for ‘the age we are living in’, guiding us to reclaim our innate design for presence, ease, connection to life. We discover that, like every other creature, we are designed around a ‘startle’ pattern and a ‘freeing’ response-- reflexes embedded deeply in our neurological web, one for protection, the other to release back into our natural ease of movement when it is safe.

As we learn to bring more concious awareness to our

whole self, we can elicit this freeing response at will. As habits

of interference fall away, movement becomes dance, and speaking,

a wished-for song. As we touch the earth, the earth touches us back.

We can sense what indigenous peoples have always known.

We are the earth, the water, the air...threaded with the very

dust of the stars.

We invite you to join us at the Sevenoaks Retreat Center,

in the beautiful mountains of Virginia, for our annual Summer Residential Course dedicated to the discoveries of F.M. Alexander.

This year we will come together once again in a supportive, deeply nourishing, learning community. We welcome you! — longtime returning participants, beginning and advanced students, along with teachers who wish to deepen their skills. Our days are filled with rich explorations of the Alexander principles in small and large groups with a high teacher-student ratio.

A continuing inspiration for our Alexander community

is the faculty's shared study with Marjorie Barstow, a graduate of

F.M. Alexander's first teacher training course. Marjorie worked

primarily within a group setting, bringing even the simplest of

activity to an art form. We honor her teaching influence in the daily

classes and group activities during the workshop.

Our event is held at the Sevenoaks Retreat Center near Charlottesville, Va.

“I want to feel both the beauty and the pain

of the age we are living in.

I want to survive my life without becoming numb.

I want to speak and comprehend words of wounding

without having these words become the landscape where I dwell.

I want to possess a light touch

that can elevate darkness to the realm of stars.”

~ Terry Tempest Williams
